Name: Miriam
Gender: Female
Age: 6 months
Breed: Cocker Spaniel
Weight: 15lbs
Disability: blind in right eye, suspected unilaterally deaf
Dogs: yes
Cats: yes
Kids: yes
Socialization/training: Miriam is learning to walk on a leash. She knows to sit and touch the hand. We are working on lay down. She is given a thumbs up sign and then a treat reward. Hand waving is used to get her attention or when she is asked to come. Continued puppy classes are recommended. She does like to jump up at people for attention. She is treat motivated. Now that Miriam is off strict cage rest, she has begun meeting people and being exposed to new environments. She has done great with any dog she has met. She has also done well with meeting new people. She can be slightly shy at first, but quickly warms up. She did meet Santa and was not afraid of his outfit.
Crate trained: Yes, settles in the crate well. Likes to have peanut butter kong. Has been crated up to 8 hours. Has never been left outside of the crate when people are not present.
Leash trained: Learning to walk on a leash and harness. Has done well walking around at the pet supply store. She shows no interest in wildlife.
Activity Level: Miriam has a good amount of energy. She likes to have another dog or a person available for play time when she is outside. She loves to play fetch and is always carrying a ball around in her mouth. She does play with other toys, but a ball is her number one choice. She is good at self-entertaining when inside the house. Miriam loves to play with other dogs. She is very good at initial introductions and understands dog social cues. Miriam doesn’t take many naps during the day but settles down and sleeps through the whole night.
Fence: Miriam would be ok with leash walking for potty time or a fenced in backyard. She will bolt out doors. It would be recommended to keep her leashed or put her in a crate if you open a door, you don’t want her to go out.
Behavior: Miriam can be very affectionate when she’s not being distracted by her fur-friends. She loves to have her belly rubbed. She doesn’t sit still much and is often playing with another dog or rolling a ball along the floor. She can become nervous when being introduced to new environments but does quickly adapt and become comfortable. She does well for baths and nail trims. She rides well in the car. Tolerates wearing dog clothes and posing for pictures.
Medical History: Miriam was born with a fairly large hole in her heart. This condition is referred to as Patent Ductus Arteriosus. She had PDA surgery, to close the hole in her heart, in November. Her 1 month recheck has been completed and the cardiologist recommends she have a recheck this time next year, one year after initial surgery. Her cardiologist said that often times after the 1 year recheck, he no longer has to see the patient back ever again. Typically, no life-long meds are needed either. Should she need to be placed on a heart medication for the rest of her life, this medication costs about $40-$60 a month. She will need to stay on this medication until her 1 year recheck. This cost can be covered by the rescue if Miriam is adopted out to an Ohio family. The cardiologist is highly confident that Miriam will live a long, happy, and healthy life moving forward. She will need to be spayed after her 1 year recheck, which that cost will be covered by the rescue. An adopter will need to keep in mind that as well. Miriam is vision and hearing impaired. We believe she has unilateral hearing. She responds to whistling and her name being called. When she hears a noise, she isn’t always sure where its coming from.
