Socialization/training: Due to no fault of her own, Bagel is a sweet girl that was returned to Pink Heart after being adopted in December 2022. She was not up to date on vaccines when she was returned (but is now) and had a skin infection, so we have taken socialization slowly. She adores humans! She loves being around her human foster parents and human teenagers. She has done well with a dog her same size, but acts more scared of a larger dog. Giving her more time and reassurance is helping her confidence around all sizes of dogs. She is not currently housed with cats. She is strong and her bursts of energy and lack vision may catch a smaller person off guard. She is a happy girl who is well behaved on walks and in the house. Bagel is highly food motivated, and we are working on impulse control so we can start touch commands. After a few days of mapping out the house, Bagel has been excellent at alerting us when she needs to go potty. She can get super excited when she smells a new person walk into the room. On rare occasions she may give a bark of confusion to a new person, but once she smells their hand, she’s ready to play.

Crate trained: Work in progress. She may bark and cry for 5-10 minutes to tell you she’d rather be on the couch with you, but she settles in after a brief complaint for overnight. Crate training during the day is more of a struggle for her since she wants to be around her people and the couch. She is working on being unsupervised in a room alone and seems to be doing well for short periods. A plastic crate seems to be better, since she likes her area dark and has learned how to unlock a sibling’s wire crate. She has always kept a dry crate.

Leash trained: Bagel is a happy walker. She can sometimes get confused on leash and forgets where her human is, but with a quick hand sniff she remembers and is on her way again. Her foster family has found it easier to use a harness for longer walks, and she doesn’t pull unless there is a good stiff. Keep her on a shortened leash so she doesn’t run into things, and it will be an enjoyable walk for all.

Activity Level: She is a great mix of active and lazy. She is ok with a few walks a day, and some silly inside plays. She likes to play tug with a rope toy. Also enjoys snuffle mats and hunting for food randomly scattered on floor.

Fence: She does well on a leash but would love some open area to do some zoomies at least once in a while. When off leash in a fenced yard she sticks close to her humans, as she becomes more acclimatized, she adventures more. Because of her disabilities she will need a fence or a leash when outside.

Behavior: Bagel is an absolute sweetheart! She loves to play with a human who has a cloth toy or cuddle up next to you. She loves to cuddle next to her people and stay close by. If you stop long enough, she may lay on your feet while you are still standing. She follows you around if she can smell you and is easily directed to where she needs to go if she doesn’t find you first. She should be supervised with toys as she is a strong chewer. She will lay and chew on plush or rubber toys as long as you let her. She has been able to destroy some rubber toys, so she will need the aggressive chewer type, but she does love them and stays occupied for a while.

Medical History: With medication and a change of diet, her skin infection is healed up well. We suspect she has a chicken allergy and is doing well on a turkey-based diet. She was a superstar taking her medication without hesitation. She appears blind in one eye and partial vision in the other. She can see well enough not to run into larger objects (i.e. walls, doors couch), but does run into smaller objects (i.e. light posts, table legs). She can see better in brighter light but overcast days and evenings she may struggles a bit.

Foster Comments: Bagel is a wonderful dog that deserves a great home. She has been amazing at taking her medication and baths. She can take a flight of indoor stairs up, and we are working on her going down.
