Socialization/training: Before coming to us, Pinto spent all of his time outside in a kennel. He has quickly become acquainted with indoor life and fallen in love with it! He just wants to be close to his humans. He doesn’t jump, mouth, or chew. He is 100% housetrained. He is content just to follow you from room to room and to get excited about the squirrels outside the window, and that’s his ideal day. His favorite things include napping on the couch and gnawing on a bone, and to be honest, he doesn’t do much more than that! He has started to learn “come” and “place” and does well with those. He is very food motivated and meal time is his favorite time of day. Since his interaction with the world has been so limited, he is easily spooked by people and anything that is new to him, including the TV. However, once he realizes he’s in no danger, he calms right down. He would benefit from continued work on obedience and desensitization to the strangeness of the outside world, but he’s such a well behaved dog that this won’t be difficult and will come naturally with time.
Crate trained: Pinto has started showing signs of separation anxiety, and has quickly become adept at escaping from crate Once he’s out of his crate, he’s not destructive. He just wanders the home looking for you and lays by the door until you come back. He would be happiest being uncrated once he is acclimated to his new home, but we are continuing to work with him on crate training.
Leash trained: Pinto loves being outside and has enough energy for a few blocks. Oftentimes, he would prefer to just look around and sniff rather than go for a speedy walk. He will keep pace with you for a couple blocks, but after that he slows down considerably and you’ll find yourself dragging him. He truly is the sleepiest, laziest, cuddliest dog I’ve ever met
Activity Level: the absolute lowest. Think cat energy--will have an occasional spurt of energy
when outside or playing with toys, but otherwise just wants to relax and be next to you while
chewing on his bones. He doesn’t need extensive walk or play time. He does enjoy brief training sessions and does well with them. He would be the perfect dog for someone with a busier lifestyle or without much energy themselves
Fence: Pinto enjoys exploring the backyard, but he doesn’t need a fenced in area. He would do fine on the leash for potty breaks.
Behavior: Pinto is such a sweet, timid boy. He takes a while to warm up with you, but is
searching for a solid bond. He will follow you from room to room and kindly ask for pets at every opportunity. He will need some work on his confidence with strangers and the outside world. He loves play time with his dog housemate and is excited to meet dogs in the outside world, so would do well with another dog in the household, but it is not necessary. He loves to get pets once he is comfortable, and tolerates being manhandled very well. He hasn’t shown any signs of aggression towards humans or dogs. He does struggle with cats--I would urge folks with cats to consider another adoptable pup or be prepared for
some intensive desensitization.
