Name: Sloan

Gender: Male

Age: 4 years

Breed: Catahoula

Weight: 60lbs

Disability: Deaf

Dogs: yes

Cats: yes

Kids: yes

Socialization/training: Sloan knows the sign for sit, down, shake, come, no, in, place, and he knows how to jump an agility hurdle and go through a tunnel. He loves learning new things. He is very well socialized with other people and is learning to sit politely to greet new people and not jump up. He was a hot commodity with the ladies at the vets office and knew how to turn on the charm. If you bend down to say hello to him, even for the first time meeting him, he tends to want to crawl right into your lap. He is currently 1 of 5 other dogs in his foster home and lives with 3 cats. Zero issues with either, he is pretty indifferent to the cats and typically doesn’t even offer to chase them if they run. Sloan has lived in a home with a doggie door before and knows how to use one. Sloan would probably be suited better for more sturdier children. Sloan has good house manners and typically needs little direction inside the home. Sloan is better suited in a crate if you leave. He plays with dogs that will play with him and is respectful around older dogs or dogs who aren’t as playful. He has shown no resource guarding tendencies in his foster home. He does have a habit of trying to suckle fleece blankets and should be promptly redirected from doing so.

Crate trained: Sloan is crate trained. He is currently fed all his meals in his crate, as are all the other dogs in the home he lives in. He will happily go in there and settles down fairly quickly with most times, zero protesting. It is unknown how he would do outside of his crate when people aren’t home. Expect some regression as he moves to a new environment and is testing boundaries/settling in. Sloan is currently crated for 8-10 hours with no issues.

Leash trained: Yes! He was surrendered to our rescue for being hard to manage on a leash and being reactive to other dogs on walks but with training he has graduated from those nuisance behaviors and now composes himself like a total gentleman. He will need a confident handler ready to take over that roll so he has confidence in his human for guidance. He is friendly and happy to meet people he sees out and about. He loves getting to get out and explore. He would make a great hiking buddy.

Activity Level: Sloan has a moderate energy level. He could spend hours hanging out with other dogs and playing chase or WWE wrestling with any dogs that will play with him. Sometimes he does have to be reminded to be gentle. A home with at least one other dog, playful or not, would be preferred. Once inside, he loves to work on his obedience or entertain himself by chewing on bones next to his people on the couch.

Fence: Sloan will need a fenced in yard for his next home. He loves nothing more than to get outside and check his perimeters and make sure everything is in good working order. He is watchful of neighbors or things in his environment that are not in the normal and will alert you of them, but is not a nuisance barker. Sloan is very respectful of his 5 foot chain link fence he currently has at his foster home and does not try to dig under or escape. He may be an okay candidate for an invisible fence system in a country setting.

Behavior: Sloan is such an affectionate, playful, goofy, and eager to please dog. He is always sure to have his charm turned all the way up. Sloan has never had a bad day and is always happy to just be here. He would be a good bro dog and even a good dog for the first time deaf dog owner. Whoever ends up with him will be incredibly blessed. Sloan really loves to learn and flourishes on guidance and direction from his humans. It would be ideal for a new family to enroll in some entry level obedience courses with him so that you too can learn to work with this boy so he can continue to flourish into the dog with so much potential we know he has!
