Socialization/training: Clifford came to us as a breeder surrender from the Cincinnati area. Cliff doesn’t know any specific commands yet, we have been working on potty training, crate training, leash training, confidence building and proper socialization. He had been quite under-socialized prior to coming here, we have been working hard on it. He is very fearful of anything new, new places, new sights, new objects. He is fearful with new people at first but warms up quickly, he then enjoys people a lot. He does submissive pee when he gets nervous, we think it’s something he will grow out of with time and confidence building. He loves both his foster parents. He LOVES other dogs. He would greatly benefit from another stable and confident dog, it helps him a lot to watch other dogs confidently walk into new situations with ease. Leash walking has gotten a thousand times better since he’s been in foster, walking in new places has been so helpful for him because he’s learning that he can’t retreat and run away so even if things are scary we can keep our composure and keep moving. He’s a typical puppy in the house, will get into things and chew on them if he can, usually if he has lots of good choices laying around he will choose something productive to do. He will be a puppy that needs extensive socialization, a couple outings a week would be ideal to gain confidence.
Crate trained: Yes, he is crated during the day for a full work day and at night for bedtime. He does not have potty accidents in the crate. He goes in and lays down, occasionally whines but if you throw a blanket over his crate he settles nicely. He seems to really like his crate.
Leash trained: We have worked a lot on leash walking, when he came he would flail and panic at any leash pressure. Our expectations for leash walking are pretty low for now, just working on carrying himself with confidence in new places. He’s done really well! He rarely pulls and is learning how to turn leash pressure on and off.
Activity Level: He’s been medium energy so far but as he grows and matures I could see him being more high energy. He typically plays with the other dogs outside and does some zoomies, he loves the other dogs and picks a couple to play with. He’s still pretty busy in the house but I think with some tethered time he would learn how to settle quickly.
Fence: Not required. Currently, he is always supervised but he likes to stay close to his people and the other dogs. A fenced home, a home that does mainly leash walking, or a home with no fence would be okay as long as someone is supervising.
Behavior: Cliff loves to cuddle and play with his people, he’s goofy but also has a reserved side that we hope will go away with some confidence building. He will need some patience and lots of consistency in his new home, change up his schedule and take him to as many new places as possible. He will need a steady hand that is his rock when he’s nervous. He loves to follow you around the house and is happy to be where you are but also will entertain himself with a couple toys and chews.
