Name: Jolene
Gender: Female
Age: 13 months
Breed: Mixed
Weight: 60lbs
Disability: hearing impaired
Dogs: yes
Cats: yes
Kids: yes
Socialization/training: Jolene is well socialized and the first thing that new people usually comment about her, is how extremely happy she is to just be existing in this world. Which is true, she just loves people and other dogs. She currently lives with 3 other dogs and 3 cats. It took her several days to leave the cats alone but now they’re yesterday's news to her. She was a ham at the vets office and so good for everything they had to do to her. Jolene was surrendered to our rescue with the statement that she would get in bed with the family’s non verbal/non mobile little boy in the middle of the night and it posed a safety concern for him if he laid on him in the middle of the night. Her desire to love her people, became a fault to her. She was super depressed the first week when she came to us, you could tell she really missed her family and kiddos. Jolene has never shown an ounce of aggression and is just a lovable and gentle girl. She is very submissive with other dogs, so submissive that her 12lb chiweenie foster sibling had Jolene on her back in submission when they first met. Jojo has been around up to 6 other dogs at a time offleash, with no issues. Jolene is more hearing than she is non hearing. Truth be told, if we had known that information before she came to us, we wouldn’t have taken her in. So if you’ve been looking to adopt from us but are scared to fully commit to something that is fully deaf, Jo would be a good intro into the special needs world for you. Jo will make a really wonderful companion for just about any environment, as she is so easy going and friendly. She knows how to sit and how to jump through an agility hurdle. Jolene is good for nail trims and baths. Lover of all toys. She also rides well in the car. She is still a teenager and has to be reminded of her manners on occasion but otherwise is such an angel.
Crate trained: Jolene is perfectly crate trained. She goes in on her own and without fuss. She is crated while her foster parents are at work or at night. Although, Jolene would much prefer to sleep in bed with you at night and makes for a wonderful cuddle buddy. It is unknown how she would do without a crate if her people were away, but always better safe than sorry!
Leash trained: Jolene is good on a leash, she currently uses a front clip harness. She lacks confidence when walking new paths through new neighborhoods, but when she is familiar with her surroundings, she really seems to enjoy getting out to explore. She is non reactive towards strangers, wildlife, and other animals.
Activity Level: Jolene is lower to medium energy. She loves to play outside with her foster brother in short spurts, go to the park and run around with her other canine friends, play with toys on the couch while you watch TV, or is perfectly content laying next to you or on your lap while you both binge watch your favorite show. Jolene settles in the house very well and is no stranger to holding down the couch.
Fence: Jolene’s one and only fault is that she can be an escape artist at times, when it comes to fencing. She has jumped her fosters 5 foot split rail chainlink fence on one occasion and has pushed under the chain link on several other occasions. Her previous owners also noted that she did this behavior and it is now actively being worked to correct. She does not do this when you are right out there with her watching, she doesn’t do it every single time she’s outside, and she doesn’t run away when she gets out, so her motivation/pattern to escape is unknown. Jolene can hear well enough that if she is out in the yard and you whistle/yell/clap your hands, she comes running back inside. She also knows that if you hit the beeping sound option on her ecollar, that means it’s time to come inside. Jolene would be fine with a fenced in yard, if you can always watch her, but would also be fine with an invisible fence or long leash walks. She is also not the quickest about going out to do her business though.
